As someone who’s spent the last decade helping brands create online stores, I often compare picking an eCommerce platform to choosing between a specialized sports car and an all-purpose SUV. Shopify is that performance-tuned sports car—built from the ground up specifically for eCommerce, powerful under the hood, fast, reliable, and precisely engineered for selling online. Squarespace, on the other hand, is like the versatile SUV—comfortable, stylish, and great for general purposes, but not necessarily optimized for high-performance selling.
If you’re reading this, chances are you’re serious about eCommerce. You might be launching a new online business, or perhaps your current site needs an upgrade to handle increasing orders. Whatever your goal, let’s explore how Shopify and Squarespace stack up, and why Shopify tends to emerge as the better choice for businesses that want to grow significantly online.
Shopify Overview: Built to Sell
Shopify was founded in 2006 with a singular mission: simplify online selling. Over the years, I’ve personally helped numerous brands launch on Shopify, and consistently, the feedback has been stellar. From startups shipping their first few orders to brands pulling in seven figures a month, Shopify handles it gracefully. It scales effortlessly, offers an unmatched ecosystem of apps, and prioritizes user experience and site performance.
• Easy setup with intuitive interfaces
• Excellent built-in SEO capabilities
• Highly scalable infrastructure
• Huge marketplace of apps and integrations
• Industry-leading security and reliability
• Premium themes and advanced apps can add extra costs
• Less flexibility in general-purpose content management compared to Squarespace
Squarespace began as a sleek website builder aimed at creative professionals, photographers, bloggers, and small businesses. Its templates are stunning—no doubt about it—and if you prioritize aesthetics over everything else, Squarespace initially feels like an appealing option.
However, when clients come to me frustrated with their current eCommerce performance on Squarespace, the main complaint I often hear is limited scalability and functionality. As their businesses grew, Squarespace simply couldn’t keep up. It’s great for portfolios and basic online stores, but when things get serious, its limitations become apparent.
• Exceptional, designer-quality templates
• Simple drag-and-drop site builder
• Ideal for small, visually-driven brands
• Limited scalability
• Basic eCommerce functionality
• No robust app ecosystem
• SEO capabilities lag behind Shopify
When I helped a friend set up her clothing boutique online, we started with Squarespace because of its simplicity. It felt easy at first—upload products, choose a beautiful theme, and you’re live. But when she needed advanced inventory management, upselling, cross-selling, and abandoned cart features—Squarespace struggled.
Shopify, though also intuitive, is initially more structured. The back-end dashboard is clear and organized, designed specifically to manage orders, customers, inventory, marketing campaigns, and sales analytics with ease. The short learning curve soon pays off in more effective management and efficiency. Shopify quickly became our go-to recommendation for serious sellers.
Shopify vs. Squarespace: Pricing & Cost Analysis
Both Shopify and Squarespace use subscription-based pricing, but there are differences.
• Basic: $29/month
• Shopify: $79/month
• Advanced: $299/month
• Business: $33/month
• Basic Commerce: $36/month
• Advanced Commerce: $65/month
At first glance, Squarespace seems cheaper. But once you account for transaction fees (Squarespace charges 3% on their Business plan), and the hidden costs of lost sales opportunities due to limited features, Shopify proves to offer much better overall value.
One client I worked with launched on Squarespace, enamored with its visual aesthetics. But as their orders grew, Squarespace began to slow down. Inventory tracking and product variations were frustratingly limited. Eventually, we migrated them to Shopify. The difference? Night and day. Shopify effortlessly handled thousands of SKUs and hundreds of orders per day, all while maintaining site speed and seamless integrations.
This experience isn’t unique. If you’re serious about growing your online business, Shopify’s infrastructure is built precisely for scale. It can easily handle large product catalogs, massive sales spikes during promotions, and global expansion—without slowing down or faltering.
SEO is critical in eCommerce. Shopify knows this and comes equipped with robust built-in SEO tools right out of the box—optimized URL structures, mobile responsiveness, fast load speeds, easy metadata edits, and integration with Google Search Console. Plus, there’s an array of apps available to enhance your SEO further.
Squarespace has decent SEO capabilities, but it lacks flexibility. For example, it has rigid URL structures and limitations on customizing SEO metadata fully. This often results in missed opportunities to rank well for competitive keywords.
Shopify takes care of hosting, security updates, PCI compliance, and site reliability. All of these are included in your subscription, offering significant peace of mind. Squarespace similarly handles hosting and security but lacks Shopify’s proven track record of reliably managing large-scale traffic, high-volume sales, and enterprise-level security requirements.
This is one of the biggest differentiators. Shopify’s extensive app store gives businesses almost unlimited functionality. Whether you want loyalty programs, advanced analytics, email automation, or inventory tracking across multiple locations, Shopify’s apps can easily handle it. Squarespace lacks a comparable app ecosystem, making it difficult to enhance functionality beyond basic eCommerce needs.
Squarespace is visually beautiful and great for beginners. However, Shopify clearly stands out as the preferred platform if you’re serious about eCommerce. It scales effortlessly, offers powerful built-in tools, extensive integrations, advanced SEO, and unmatched reliability.
Having helped numerous brands migrate from Squarespace to Shopify, I’ve consistently seen improved sales performance, greater customer satisfaction, and overall business growth post-switch.
If you’re serious about growing your online store, Shopify is undoubtedly the smarter investment.
